Chuncheon Specialty ‘Potato Bread’ Announces Expansion Beyond Korea to the Global Market

Chuncheon’s famous potato bread, selling over 6.4 million pieces annually, started as a dessert people lined up for at a cafe. Chuncheon’s iconic ‘Potato Bread’ is receiving love calls beyond the domestic market and into overseas markets. Lee Miso, CEO of Agricultural Corporation Bat, which first created Chuncheon potato bread, said, “My motivation to develop potato bread came from wanting to preserve diverse potato varieties following my father.”

Potato bread began at the Chuncheon Potato Field cafe and has become a representative Korean snack available immediately through online shopping malls like Market Kurly. What’s the secret to its popularity? First, it contains 27.08% potatoes. Those unfamiliar with food might question if 27.08% is significant, but many products are sold as “potato bread” or “juice” with only 2% content.

The bread is baked in an oven with fluffy, savory domestic potatoes packed inside, making those who try it come back for more. The potato bread closely resembles real potatoes in shape and appearance. The outer surface is coated with black sesame seeds and soybean powder, visually winning customers’ hearts.

Currently, Agricultural Corporation Bat supplies potatoes through contract farming with local farmers. Farmers can focus solely on farming, while the company secures a stable supply, making it a model case for fostering the local economic ecosystem. An official from Agricultural Corporation Bat stated, “We are now heading toward the global market beyond Korea.”

Agricultural Corporation Bat’s 2025 overseas expansion plan focuses on the US and Japan as main markets, aiming to expand exports worldwide. In particular, in Japan, the company signed a contract with Food & Time Isetan of the Isetan Group, the largest department store chain in East Asia, and plans to operate a pop-up store at the Yokohama branch, which sees 2.2 million visitors annually, starting from April. CEO Lee said, “We plan to steadily increase the export share so that Chuncheon potato bread can be easily found not only in Korea but also in overseas markets.”
